YCT 1 Character Worksheets:
Inside the First Three Lessons
Print-ready Chinese handwriting practice sheets aligned to the YCT Level 1 syllabus — trace, write, and master 80 words across 11 lessons.
Learning to write Chinese by hand is one of the best ways for a young learner to internalize characters — but beginners need structured practice grids, correct stroke-order models, and Pinyin cues. The YCT 1 handwriting worksheet set is built exactly for that: 11 printable PDFs, each guiding a child from tracing red example characters to writing independently in blank grids. Here's a detailed look at what's inside the first three lessons.
The Full Set at a Glance
The workbook bundle (YCT1 BOOK1.zip) contains 11 lesson PDFs, each themed around an everyday situation a child can immediately use — greetings, asking names, talking about family, shopping, and telling the time. The entire set covers the official YCT Level 1 vocabulary of 80 words.
The complete bundle — one PDF per lesson, 11 in total.

Inside the First Three Worksheets
Every page follows the same proven layout: large red model character with Pinyin on top → four traceable red-dot cells → blank rice-grid boxes for independent writing. Here's exactly what your child will practice on each of the first three sheets.
你好! Hello!
The very first worksheet — numbers 1 through 10, plus the three most essential greeting phrases.
This opening sheet is deliberately rewarding: a child starts by writing the ten basic Chinese numerals (一 to 十), then moves straight into the greetings they'll use on day one — 你好 (hello), 老师 (teacher), and 再见 (goodbye). Pinyin sits above every character, so pronunciation is never a guess.
你叫什么? What's Your Name?
Self-introduction — pronouns, the verb "to be called," and the polite "very happy to meet you."
Lesson 2 moves from pure characters into building real sentences. The child practices 我叫 (I am called), 什么 (what), 认识 (to know/acquaintance), and the polite expression 很高兴 (very happy/glad). The pronouns 她 (she) and the question particle 吗, plus the negation 不, round out a sheet that teaches the building blocks of first conversations.
他是谁? Who Is He?
Asking about people — question words, nationality, and the all-important word for "China."
Lesson 3 introduces the masculine pronoun 他 (he) and the verb 是 (to be), paired with the question words 谁 (who) and 哪 (which). The second half of the sheet covers 国人 (country/person) and the country name 中国 (China) — a character set every new learner wants to write first. The repeated 人 (person) cell reinforces this high-frequency character.
Why These Worksheets Work
What makes this set different from random character lists? Every design choice serves a real beginner's need:
Rice-Grid (米字格) Guides
The crosshair grid inside every box teaches stroke placement and proportion — exactly where each line should start and end.
Red Stroke-Order Model
Each new character appears once large and in red, showing the correct form before the child traces it in dotted cells below.
Pinyin Above Every Character
No guessing the pronunciation. Pinyin is printed directly above each character so reading and writing reinforce each other.
Trace → Write Progression
Four dotted-trace cells build muscle memory, followed by blank grids where the child writes independently — then repeats.
YCT 1 Syllabus-Aligned
The 11 lessons cover all 80 words on the official YCT Level 1 vocabulary list — finish the set and you're exam-ready.
Star Rating & Progress Tracking
Each sheet has a star self-evaluation row and a name/date line, turning practice into a trackable, rewarding habit.
How the 80 Words Distribute Across the Set
The official YCT 1 syllabus groups vocabulary into everyday categories, and the worksheets follow that same logic — nouns, numbers, pronouns, basic verbs, and simple adjectives, all taught through themed lessons rather than in isolation.
