Doughbots is a creature creation minigame that allows users to create bread-robot hybrids called Doughbots by combining robotic and bakery ingredients. The tagline: Combine, Create, Collect!
Vision
To create an experience with customizable options geared towards younger children, with the option to let them make their own choices and explore different combinations.
Solution
Through this minigame, players can create bread-robot hybrids called Doughbots by combining 3 robotic and bakery ingredients. Each combination will create a creature with different characteristics and personalities. There are 27 different combinations of hybrid creatures to collect.
Sketches of robotic parts and bakery ingredients, as well as possible Doughbot combinations. Some earlier customizable options included butter, bagels, or gear parts. The style is simple but friendly, with a cartoon-like feel, to appeal to younger audiences.
When the game starts, the player is greeted by robo-chef, a character that explains the game process and helps the player assemble their character. They start by choosing from 3 sets of ingredients, such as a bar of chocolate, a slice of white bread, and a set of speakers, to form a bread-robot hybrid. The newly formed Doughbot has a name with a given set of characteristics. From here, the player can replay to check out the other possible combinations.
The most interesting part I learned from this project after presenting it to multiple groups of families with young children, was that a lot of children aren't familiar with using a mouse. This minigame could only be controlled through mouse clicks, but many of the children tried to tap the screen instead. This is definitely something I would keep in mind in the future.
